I have been a DirecTv customer since 1998. I agree the PQ is better, but I still want HD. Awesome TV, but I have the brightness to max.I was waiting for the new DTV HD Tivo. I have LOVED my R10 Tivo units. I purchased R16 from local BB for $100.WOW, what a difference in Picture Quality between the R10 vs R16.
Costco is selling the lower S14 model for $1499). In the early days I purchased different receivers to review the different features. Last year I upgraded my R10s to 250Gb drives. As for the on screen DVR services, like Guide, recording setups, review list for recorded shows, etc., the DTV R16 DVR does everything my R10 Tivo DVR does, but the R16 is slower. This is a 2 weeks review.
As for the new DTV remote, we both love it. Note both are 480i Std Def. If not OK, then wait for the new DTV HD Tivo receiver. 5 weeks ago I had to upgrade my 36in TV to Panasonic TC-P54S1 plasma (Frys $1299 yes a S1 model for $1299.
Early 2009 rumors target release Nov 2009, now rumors are maybe March 2010. I have order one HR23 from Newegg, to ensure I get a HR23, and requested a HR23 directly from DTV and dish antenna (SWM) upgrade. My R16 is GREAT. The R16 PQ is so sharp on the 54in. TV, my wife asked why get HD. I actually like it better then the Tivo peanut remote. Go HD with DTV DVR now or wait for the DTV HD Tivo. Upon the HR23s arrival I will move the R16 from the 54in TV to the 27in bedroom TV.
In 2005 I replaced all 3 (Family Rm, TV room & Bedroom) of my DTV receivers to the R10 Tivo DVR unit with a 80Gbyte drive. The Amazon R16 picture is incorrect. Note I did talk to a Tivo rep who said the new DTV HD Tivo will charge a $12.95/mo for DVR service, versus the present DTV DVR $6/mo service charge. What to do. Finally I decide I would test the DTV DVR by switching to one R16 (Std Def), and if OK, then maybe switch the other two units to the HR23. Conclusion: I will now upgrade my two other R10s to the DTV HR23 HD DVR. The R16 is black and smaller.
Poor quality ,sluggish ,difficult to operate ,does not buffer on both tuners. Directv needs to go back to tivo based dvrs. Absolutely awful
In fact, (the previous model DIRECTV R15 Receiver/Digital Video Recorder--Up to 100 Hours) was so poor that it forced me to go to Ebay and buy an older Tivo model. What is the problem. Finally after three months I decided to cancel my Direct Tv Service------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Well all of us Direct TV users can sigh a bit of relief - we finally have an improvement over the old DVR R15 - which was a nightmare for all of its owners. FInal verdict, the Direct TV DVR R16 is strictly a functional unit that lacks the pizzaz of many the competing products.
It is an additional charge but some find it worth the cost.Areas for improvement - - This is 2008 WHY would Direct Tv introduce a new product that does NOT include Wifi access. - Since there is no WiFi access you do not have the ability to rent or buy movies on Amazon.com and have them send it directly to the unit (like it does with a Tivo). I have filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. I have spent HOURS on the phone with Direct TV without resolution. It has continually frozen, however the biggest flaw is the constant "722 Error" for some reason I get an error message saying that I am not receiving a satellite signal despite the fact I am able to watch TV (I have three DVR receivers this is the only model that gets the error message).
I guess that is both good news and bad. while it matches the 2003 edition Tivo (which was way ahead of it time) you would hope that 5 years could have added a few more features. The pros - - 100 hours of storage - or roughly 50 movies. In fact, I would compare it to my 2003 model Tivo. with no resolution. The older R15 model had serious issues with its ease of use - it was nearly impossible to fast forward or rewind with any kind of accuracy.
See the old reviews.it was universally despised. UPDATE - Well please disregard the 3 star review - in fact this receiver is horrible. - Pause live tv for 90 minutes (60 minutes longer than my old Tivo) - Ease of use.rewinding and fast forwarding is a snap. - Direct Tv has built in features that allows the reote control to be used for gaming (using channel 110 I think).
- If you lose power the unit takes up to 10 minutes to reset. This is a major annoyance if your power "flickers" while watching your favorite show or sporting evenet. However, this is MAJOR improvement over the R15 model.
The error message takes up about 20% of the screen. In short, the R16 should not scare you. It was a very frustrating experience.
The new R16 has fixed many of the bugs, and is a truly functioning unit. - I wish there was a choice of colors - Black is the only color. but there isn't much to excite you either.0 Stars - caused me to cancel my service with Direct TV
